First Coal Calculator for the Music Industry

18/10/2021

IMPALA, the European association of independent music companies, has launched a collaboration with Julie’s Bicycle and him to create the first custom carbon calculator for the independent sector, with the support and participation of Altafonte. The calculator will help IMPALA members measure their carbon footprint and identify hot spots. The goal is to make member ambitions actionable, have immediate impact, and are fully scalable.

During the summer, member companies and associations from all over Europe offered to support the project:! K7 Music Group, Altafonte, Because Music, Beggars Group, Cherry Red Records, City Slang, Domino Recording Company, Edel, Encoding Management Service - EMS, Epitaph Records, Everlasting Records, FONO, FUGA, HAIL, Hot Action Records, Irascible Music, Las Vegas Records, Lusitanian Music Publishing, Mouthwatering Records, NEWS Records, Ninja Tune, Partisan Records, [PIAS], Playground Music Scandinavia, PMI, Roton Music, Secretly Group, TAMBOURHINOCEROS, Two Gentlemen, Warp Records, Zebralution.

The calculator will come with a custom design and help service to facilitate carbon accounting, taking into account the analysis of direct emissions from own or controlled sources and indirect emissions, as well as relevant indirect emissions.

The calculator is part of IMPALA's broader sustainability plan, encompassing a long-term program for members, announced this April. The overall ambition is to achieve an independent intermediate sector with zero net emissions by 2026, and culminate with positive carbon by 2030. So far, IMPALA has published a sustainability commitment with 15 essential points, a practic guide for the members and a statement of climate for them. IMPALA also uses its voice to amplify other climate initiatives in the music sector, see more here..
